Business Day Due Dates

Documentation

1. What the app does

Business Day Due Dates sets a work item's due date to "N business days from now" in Jira automation rules. It skips weekends, national holidays (Japan, United States, United Kingdom) and your company holidays. You can choose which country's holidays each project uses.

2. Setup (Jira administrators, once)

  1. Install the app from the Atlassian Marketplace.
  2. Open the app's settings page and choose the default calendar. Check the time zone for "today" for each calendar you use. (In Jira: Settings (gear icon, top right) → Marketplace apps → (left menu) Business day calendars. Only Jira administrators can change the settings.)
  3. Add your company holidays (for example year-end closure or your founding day) and any extra working days (public holidays when you work).
  4. Choose a calendar for each project. Projects without one use the default calendar.

3. Creating an automation rule

  1. Choose a trigger (for example, work item created or status changed).
  2. Add the action Add business days (holiday-aware) and enter the start date and the number of business days. The first time, Jira asks you to allow Atlassian Automation to connect to Business Day Due Dates.
  3. Add Edit work item and set the due date to the action's result: {{fetchedJiraBusinessday.date}}.

We recommend leaving the start date empty. When it is empty, the app counts from "today" in the time zone of the project's calendar. To count from another date, enter one of these:

Date-time values are converted to a date in the calendar's time zone before counting. We do not recommend {{now.jiraDate}}: Jira decides that date in its own time zone, which can differ from the calendar by one day.

Note: write field names in English in smart values, even if Jira is shown in another language (a translated field name returns nothing). If a smart value returns nothing (for example, a typo or an empty Start date field), the app does not report an error; it counts from today, the same as an empty start date.

4. Business days until due

When you open a work item, the Business days until due panel shows how many business days are left. It is calculated each time you open the work item, so it is always current. It does not appear in lists or search results (the due date itself is Jira's standard due date, so you can sort and filter by it).

The panel shows one of these messages:

It also shows the calendar used and today's date in that calendar's time zone. If you change the due date, the panel recalculates within a few seconds.

5. Supported countries and years

No national holidaysWeekends and company holidays onlyThe time zone of the administrator who opens the settings pageAll national holidays

The app supports the years 2022 to 2099 for all calendars. You can change the time zones on the settings page. Time zone fields appear only for the default calendar and calendars used by projects.

6. Holiday accuracy and sources

Holidays are calculated from laws and published rules and checked against official sources every month. If we find a difference, we update the app, and the update is applied automatically. In Japan, the Vernal and Autumnal Equinox Days are fixed by an official announcement in February of the previous year.

7. If a holiday is wrong

You can fix it right away with Company holidays and Extra working days on the settings page, without waiting for an app update. Your company settings take priority over national holidays. Please also let us know through support.

8. Language

The settings page and the work item panel are shown in Japanese for users whose language is Japanese, and in English for everyone else. Because of how Jira works, the automation action's name, its input fields and the errors in the automation audit log are in English only. You can look up each error in the list below.

Right after you change your account language, the titles of the settings page and the panel may still appear in the previous language. This is caused by Jira's cached display. Reload the page with a hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on Mac) to fix it.

9. Error codes

Errors appear in the automation audit log with a code, for example "[BDD-001] Business days must be a whole number". On the settings page and in the panel, they appear in the user's language.

10. Data handling (data residency)

The app stores only the settings from its settings page. Everything is kept in Atlassian's storage (Forge hosted storage), in the same region as your Jira site. The app makes no external network requests.

DataData residency
Default calendar, weekend days, project-to-calendar mappingIn scope
Company holidays, extra working daysIn scope
Time zone for each calendarIn scope

The app stores a single settings record and no personal data such as account IDs. It uses only two scopes: read:jira-work to read work item due dates and storage:app to save its settings. Its operational logs contain only the format of inputs, calculation results, work item IDs and error codes, and never work item content or personal data. For details, see the Privacy Policy.
